Sometimes the weather outside isn’t very inviting for a trip into nature.

But we still have to come up with entertaining and educative activities for the children to do. . .

How about creating your very own book about metals?

It is super easy, and a great way to bring confidence in the research and learning process for people of all ages – especially the young ones.

Find some different metal objects around the home ( as seen in video “metals and magnetism”).

Get a sheet of paper for each type of metal you have found.
Now research on 5 or so categories of features about that metal and record them on the paper – KEEP THEM SIMPLE
Name of metal:
Object found in:
Colour of metal:
Uses for metal:
Draw the object or metal:
These are my categories I used in the video , but some other categories may include:
Hardness Smooth or rough?
Electrically conductive?
Conductive of heat?
Shiny or dull? Etc.
Some of these categories may be easy or hard to convey to your children – it is really up to you, our awareness of their needs, and our own imagination in conveying the concepts!

Once your pages are done you can create a colourful TITLE PAGE and then staple the sheets together with the title page on the front.

Creating your very first book is quite the accomplishment. Wikipedia is an OK resource for this basic level of information.

If you want to see it all in the same place, LifeRocks! up and coming book “Scientific Teachers Resource : METALS” is a one stop resource for many common metals ( please contact us for details).

Our illustrated book for children titled ” The Metals Story” is also a great way to bring the subject of metals to life ( please contact us for supply!). I hope this provides some great inspiration for you and your children to continue to discover the natural world around us!
